Marin (V. 11)

Marin almost perfectly reflects the theme residing within multiple of the residents of Mango Street, a theme of the hope and dream of a life elsewhere away from the troubles of their present lives. Vignette 11 reveals to the reader that Marin has legitimate plans to leave Mango Street and go and live with her boyfriend (husband, if they were married) in Puerto Rico. Marin plans to save enough money to begin a new life as she sells Avon and takes care of her cousins (26). Marin is Louie’s cousin, the man with the stolen yellow car. Marin consistently desires a man to take her away and marry her in America, despite her boyfriend living in Puerto Rico (26). For Marin, romance is the ideal method to escape her life on Mango Street, and she will continue to wait for “someone to change her life” (27).

Marin appears to be innocent and free within the boundaries defined by her own morals relating to boys, thus encouraging a Fearless (Taylor’s Version) personality type. Marin wishes for the perfect man, set in a You Belong With Me mindset. Marin’s own Love Story is set wherever she exists, however, she continually longs for someone to take her away. The mix of innocent love and longing fits both the album and her personality very well.
